Appearance

Bengal tigers are one of the biggest subspecies of cats today. A lot of these cats have sport yellow to light orange coats. Their stripes are a brown to a black shade.  Their bellies are white. Male tigers are usually 9 to 10 feet including their tail. They stand about 3 to 3.5 feet of the ground. The average weight of a male is from 400 to 570 lbs. Females are a tiny bit smaller than males. They are about 7.5 to 8.5 feet long. Females only weigh about 220 lbs to 350 lbs. They are about the same size as reindeer. This species of tiger are a bit larger than other species. A nine-month cub can weigh around 100 to 170 lbs.


Diet

Bengal tigers are carnivorous. Their favorite meat comes from large, hooved animals. They will eat water buffalo, wild boar, porcupines, hares, leopards, wolves, and crocodiles. Rural farmers have to beware of the tigers because they will eat their animals. When hunting, the tigers approach from the back or the side of the animal. Then immediately go for their prey's throat. After they have killed their prey then the tiger drags its prey somewhere safe to eat it. Bengal tigers can eat up to 100 pounds of meat, but they only eat about once a week and 1 of 20 hunts is successful.

Habitat

Bengal tigers live in tropical, subtropical, and temperate forests with access to water. These tigers usually stay between 660 and 9,800 feet above sea level. These tigers live mostly in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. In India, they live in tropical rainforests, grasslands, and mangroves. They live far away from humans. Also, Bengal tigers live far from other Bengal tigers. They can survive in hot or cold environments.


Reproduction

Bengal tigers mate all year round. Though cubs are born from April to December. The gestation period for female tigers is about 3.5 months. They give birth from 3 to 6 cubs. Females give birth in tall grass, caves, or thick bush. Cubs are around 1.7 lbs to 3.5 lbs. When they are born their eyes and ears are shut. They are covered with wooly fur that they lose when they are around 2.5 months. Their teeth are like human teeth, they fall off after 2.5 months. Newborn cubs drink their mother's milk for about three to six months. They start eating solid food after 2 weeks. Cubs stay with their mothers for two and a half years. Female tigers have cubs every two to three years or after their previous cub leaves. Bengal tigers live around 15 years in the wild and 20 to 25 years in captivity.
