The Medium-Sized Wolf 

Appearance

Coyotes have lean and wolf like features. They have yellow eyes, a floppy tail, and enormous ear in relations to their body size. Their coat consists of soft under fur and longer, tougher outer hairs. Coyotes fur is a mix of gray, brown, and almost yellowish on the top of its body. Their fur turns a white color on their bellies and throat, and a red-brown color around their legs and feet. Coyotes shed their fur every summer with anew coat. On average, coyotes measure about 3 ft or an exact measure 37 inches. Their tail is approximately 16 inches. They weigh on an average 50 lbs. Females are a tiny bit smaller than males. Coyotes are about the same size as a border collie. 

Diet

Coyotes are omnivorous which means they eat both plants and meat. Coyotes usually eat smaller animals such as rabbit, mice, and squirrels but, if the coyote is in a pack it could hunt deer as well. They also eat small birds, snakes, and insects. Coyotes can eat fruits and vegetables. They prefer to hunt live animals. They could either hunt with their pack or alone by themselves. 

Habitat 

Coyotes are found spread across Central and North America. They live as south as Panama to far north as Canada and Alaska. Coyote have evolved to living in mountains, swamps, forest, plains, deserts, and tropical forests. Coyotes have become so common that they are used to living near humans in urban and suburban areas. 

Reproduction 

Coyotes' breeding season lasts for about three months, from January to March. Males and females will stay together for a couple of years, not forever. After carrying her pups for about two months, she will give birth to about 6 pups. The most pups that were born at one time was 19 pups! When pups are born they are tiny, blind, and helpless, so both parents will care for their children. Pups will achieve full independence from their parents when they are six to nine months old. Females will stay in their pack and help other mothers find food for their pups and help care for them. Coyotes can live from about 10 years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity.
