The Wolverine
Appearance
Wolverines have stocky and muscular bodies, they have drawn comparison to a miniature bear. Features that wolverines have are powerful, short limbs, five toes on each paw, sharp and retractable claws, and a powerful bite to help them catch their prey. Their fur comes in colors like brown or black with a yellow or gold stripe coming from their head to their back. Their patterns on their body are different from each individual wolverine. Wolverines are from 26 inches to 30 inches in length plus 7 to 10 inches more with their tail. They weigh from 28 lbs to 65 lbs. Females are smaller than males.
Diet
Wolverines are best described as omnivorous. Wolverines are also known to scavenge other animals and are known to be scavengers. In the summer, wolverines will mostly eat berries and plants. The rest of the year they eat rabbits, rodents, and leftover dead animals. Wolverines kill their prey by biting its neck to crush its throat.
Habitat
Wolverines live in cold and in the north like in Canada, Russia, and Alaska. They no longer live in the United States except for Alaska. They inhabit forests and tundra, they are suitable for them because they offer the most territory to roam around in.
Reproduction
Wolverines, during their breeding season tend to mate with any member of the opposite gender that is living inside or near its territory. A wolverines mating season is from May to August. Females can delay the birth of their kits. The gestation period for wolverines is from 30 to 50 days. When a female wolverine gives birth, she is safely inside her den and gives birth to 3 kits. Kits rely heavily on their mother. Kits begin to grow rapidly once they are born. At five to seven months old, kits are fully capable of hunting on their own. It takes a wolverine about 2 to 3 years to reach adulthood. Wolverines live about 12 years but females tend to live as long as 17 years.
