The Mustached Monkey

The Mustached Monkey

Appearance
Emperor tamarins stand 9 to 12 inches tall. They are tiny animals and can weigh about 1 lb. These tamarins are covered in grey fur with a little red and yellow, on the back and chest. They have black hands and feet. Their tails are brown and are very long compared to their bodies. Tamarins have a pink mouth and nose, and they have a white, elegant-looking mustache and sometimes they have a matching beard that goes with the mustache.

Diet
Emperor tamarins are omnivorous so they can eat both animals and plants. They can eat eggs from other animals, fruits, nectar, insects, and sometimes, small rodents. Since these tamarins are small, it is easy for them to find food. They can easily hop over tree branches and reach inaccessible food. Emperor tamarins can travel as far as 0.2 miles in the search for food.

Habitat
Bearded Emperor tamarins are found in rainforests of Brazil and Peru. Black-chinned emperor tamarin is found throughout rainforests in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. Emperor tamarins prefer lowland tropical rainforests. They are usually found living in the tree canopies of river basins. Besides living in lowland rainforests these tamarins can also live in forests that are flooded during rainy seasons, rainforests that grow on flatlands, evergreen forests, remnant forests, and in broad-leaf forests. Emperor tamarins don't live in high trees and don't live about 80 to 100 feet off the ground.

Reproduction and Life Cycle
Emperor tamarins are known to breed during rainy months and give birth. The family groups involve one female and two females. The gestation period for this tamarin is from 140 to 145 days. A female tamarin will give birth to two offspring. One to three offspring is typical but more are very rare. Other adult tamarins in the troop spring into action once a baby is born. Mothers are known to feed their babies every 2 to 3 hours for 30 minutes each feed. Fathers help carry the baby on their backs and help care for them after they are fed. Babies will ride on their father's back for 6 to 7 weeks. Babies will mature at 16 to 20 months old. Emperor tamarins can live from 10 to 20 years old.
